Why Greece should be top of your list
Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. It is one of the world's oldest cities and it is referred to as the origin of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy.
Athens is home to two Unesco World Heritage Sites, the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery.
The Acropolis is the most important ancient site in the Western world. On his top, standing as sentinel, the Parthenon; visible from almost everywhere within the city. The modernist museum at the foot of the Acropolis exhibits its surviving treasures. The surprisingly good-value restaurant offers a beautiful view.
One of the world's most important museums, the National Archaeological Museum has a wonderful collection of Greek antiquities including exquisite sculptures, pottery, jewellery, frescoes and artefacts (over 11,000 items).
The grand Panathenaic Stadium is located inbetween two hills. It was originally built for the athletic contests. It's said that around a 1000 wild animals were sacrificed in the arena for its inauguration. It can hold 70,000 spectators.
The traditional Monastiraki Flea Market has a festive atmosphere. Permanent antique and collectables shops are open all week, while the streets are occupied by vendors selling jewellery, handicrafts...
The Greeks love to eat. Don't be afraid, nothing is too spicy that you can't eat it. The spices they use are the very same that in your Kitchen. Often when you walk into a restaurant, you will be allowed or encouraged to go to the kitchen to see what they have to offer. They will also show you their meats and fishes for grilling.
Where should you have a bite in Athens? The backstreets will show you the way, for fresh koulouri breads and the Athenian twist on a hot dog.
Athens has a variety of famous big clubs where you can enjoy all kinds of music. Most of them are located at the beach coast and are only open during the summer. The ones in the centre are smaller and are transferred to bigger clubs on the beach during the summer.
