The Galle Fort Hostel (GFH) is located within the Gall Fort, which is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Galle Fort was first built by Portuguese in 1588, and extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century. GFH is a house built in the 1800s, which was recently converted to a hostel, while preserving its architectural value. GFH offers budget travelers the opportunity to experience the living history, which takes you through different periods: Portuguese, Dutch, British, into the present day. GFH provides comfortable and affordable lodging in the old house which is built according to the architectural design of the early 18th Century, with clay roofing and wooden flooring.
GFH has two large rooms, with four beds in each room, and a large living area to relax and enjoy the sea breeze. The wash rooms have modern amenities, with hot and cold water for showering. GFH also has a large kitchen area with a common refrigerator and microwave. We also offer our travelers free WIFI facilities, so they can stay connected while they re-live history.
The host is a resident of Galle fort and has an in depth knowledge of the history of Galle fort, he is by profession a dealer of coins and collectibles. The host organizes walking tours of the Galle Fort weekly (date and time of the tours are displayed in the notice board in the hostel). The host will also offer travelers assistant in planning rest of the travel in the Island if required.
Breakfast is not offered however you could easily eat out in many restaurants in the fort.
